Engage: If you do not play you cannot win

Many times I have seen people struggle with change - changing conditions, changing situations, changing roles, changing neighbours, changing weather, changing parking places, changing roads, changing work, moving to another place, changing management - leading to stress caused by insecurity, uncertainty, vulnerability and fear - and of course I have been prone to the same struggles as anybody else.

Empower: Claim Your Space

Yesterday I was talking to someone over the phone when we touched upon “writing a book”. Our discussion was interesting and it just evolved from talking about experiences in business and views on how to tackle things - one of which being that speed in decision making and execution are vital for success of the business and the team. And that in the end successful business stands and falls with a passionate team. And that often you see things quite clearly early in the process but to execute upon it takes a long time because things get in the way - thoughts, feelings, you reflect, you hesitate and lose momentum.

"Living under the Adagium that “Change is Constant” would it not be great if we could make that work in a natural flow, driven from within?"

Marja van Soest

True, everybody needs to contribute in their own ways - one by writing a book, others by managing business, others by doing both - or whatever way you find yourself capable.

Mismatching formal and informal Culture blocks innovation

Groups have always fascinated me - groups can make me feel uncomfortable because of a certain hostility towards participation, alternatively they feel like a warm bath in a very cold winter as they embrace you. Because of these biased feeling towards groups and how they work I have made a life time study of group behavior and how to best interact with groups and their members in order to get things done.

If Perception is Reality, Is Reality Perception?

About the Mouse who wanted to become a Cat: “Enough is enough” Mouse thought now that he had lost his entire family to the appetite of cats. “If this continues I will be next in line to be consumed…”, Mouse reflected while he was watching Cat eating his next of kin. Mouse stealthily crept to his refuge. “Next time it will be me”, he thought, “There is nobody left anymore”. He shared his worries with his neighbour, Hairy Spider, not a very talkative person, who kept quiet but looked understanding.

Look for Progress, not Perfection

A while ago I was talking to one of my clients about recruiting talents and he said: “You know Marja, we are all looking for a sheep with 5 legs - and seem to forget that most sheep only have 4... We laughed and concluded that indeed we are always looking for the ideal but obviously the ideal is hard to find - if it even exists. The saying kept swimming in my head for a while and I often think about it when I am facilitating training programs for future coaches.

Companies tend to adopt similar change models at the same time - like a wave overtaking ships one by one. Many times you wonder if this new model is really the best for this particular company - is it going to help this company become a new and more effective entity? Are the people in the company better off? Are the clients better serviced?
